Day 2:

Athens

Today we begin your tour of Athens, touching on the major landmarks commemorating both ancient and modern Athens.  Your tour today includes a visit to the Stadium where the first Olympic Games of the modern era were held in 1896, the Presidential Palace guarded by the Evzones in their colourful uniforms, the Temple of Olympian Zeus, Hadrian’s Arch, the Parliament, the Memorial to the Unknown Soldier, the Academy, the University, the National Library and Constitution Square.

We will then visit the Acropolis and it’s architectural masterpieces from the Golden Age of Athens including the Propylaea, the Temple of Athena Nike, the Erechtheion and of course, the magnificent Parthenon.

Then we continue to Lycabettus Hill, 277 metres above Athens via the cable car where we will have a good view over Athens sitting between the Attica Mountain Range and the Saronic Gulf.  Here we can see the small church of St George and the Lycabettus Theatre.

Overnight: Athens (B)

Day 3:

Athens

The day begins with a visit to the new Acropolis Museum, and then you continue to the ancient Agora - the market place and centre of ancient Athens - to hear about the early history of Athens.  From here you wander through the busy streets of Monastiraki towards the historical centre of the Plaka and visit the 100 year old distillery “Brettos” to taste some Greek liqueurs.

An enjoyable lunch will be served at a traditional Greek tavern before you take a drive along the coastal road to Cape Sounion, passing the beaches of Glyfada, Vouliagmeni and Varkiza.  At Cape Sounion you will be able to explore the Temple of Poseidon and the rocky promontory where there are splendid views of the Saronic Gulf.

Overnight: Athens (B,L)

Day 4:

Athens – Nafplion

We begin our drive into the Peloponnese Peninsula early this morning.  Our drive will pass over the Corinth Canal built between 1881 and 1863 and visit Corinth, once one of ancient Greece’s city states.

Our next stop will be Epidavros, built near the birthplace of Apollo’s son, Asclepius the Healer.  Epidavros is well known for it’s theater but the Asclepieion was also a significant healing centre and sanctuary in ancient times.

Heading towards the north end of the Argolic Gulf you will arrive at Nafplion, the first capital of modern Greece, but today a fishing port.  While in the vicinity of Nafplion you will visit the winery of Skouras in Nemea where you may sample wines accompanied by a variety of Greek cheeses.

A short distance from Nafplion is the archaeological site of Mycenae, the centre of Greek civilization from around 1600BC to 1100BC.

Overnight: Nafplion (B)

Day 5:

Nafplion - Sparta

After breakfast your tour will continue via Tripoli to Sparta.

Tripoli was an administrative centre for the Ottomans prior to the Greek War of Independence and a base for Greek insurgency leading to independence in 1829. From Tripoli it is a short drive to Sparta. Sparta was a unique city state in Ancient times, known for it’s military prowess and social system but today is an administrative centre.  The current city is situated on the site of ancient Sparta.

Overnight: Sparta (B)

Day 6:

Sparta - Kalamata - Olympia

Today your journey continues southward to Kalamata, the second largest city on the Peloponnese.  Famous for its olives, Kalamata is also an important local port.  After a tour of Kalamata you will visit Bassae near the temple of Apollo Epicurius, a UNESCO listed monument.  The temple was constructed between 450BC and 400BC and was the first Greek site to be placed on the World Heritage List.  It is considered unique because of it’s use of all three classical orders with Doric, Ionian and Corinthian capitals. The temple is thought to have been designed by Iktinos who also designed the Parthenon in Athens. After your visit to the temple you will continue your drive to Olympia, the site of the Olympic Games in classical times.

Overnight: Olympia (B)

Day 7:

Olympia - Delphi

After breakfast you will visit the archaeological sites of Olympia and then the Museum of Olympia. This is a wonderful morning, and will be much appreciated by those with a love for the Olympic Games. After lunch you will continue on to the sacred site of Delphi.

Overnight: Delphi (B)

Day 8:

Delphi – Athens

Our touring this morning will include the sites of Delphi, famous in Classical times as the location of the Oracle of Delphi, thought to be the centre of the world, the exact spot marked by the Omphalosi Stone.  You will see the huge theatre accommodating 5,000 spectators. Notable buildings are the Treasury of the Athenians, built to commemorate victory against the Persians at the Battle of Marathon, and the Temple of Apollo. Additional exhibits within the museum at Delphi display a range of significant artifacts from the site. After you have spent time exploring, we return to Athens for overnight.
