Day 2:

Athens

Today we begin your tour of Athens, touching on the major landmarks commemorating both ancient and modern Athens.  Your tour today includes a visit to the Stadium where the first Olympic Games of the modern era were held in 1896, the Presidential Palace guarded by the Evzones in their colourful uniforms, the Temple of Olympian Zeus, Hadrian’s Arch, the Parliament, the Memorial to the Unknown Soldier, the Academy, the University, the National Library and Constitution Square.

We will then visit the Acropolis and it’s architectural masterpieces from the Golden Age of Athens including the Propylaea, the Temple of Athena Nike, the Erechtheion and of course, the magnificent Parthenon.

Then we continue to Lycabettus Hill, 277 metres above Athens via the cable car where we will have a good view over Athens sitting between the Attica Mountain Range and the Saronic Gulf.  Here we can see the small church of St George and the Lycabettus Theatre.

Overnight: Athens (B)

Day 3:

Athens

The day begins with a visit to the new Acropolis Museum, and then you continue to the ancient Agora - the market place and centre of ancient Athens - to hear about the early history of Athens.  From here you wander through the busy streets of Monastiraki towards the historical centre of the Plaka and visit the 100 year old distillery “Brettos” to taste some Greek liqueurs.

An enjoyable lunch will be served at a traditional Greek tavern before you take a drive along the coastal road to Cape Sounion, passing the beaches of Glyfada, Vouliagmeni and Varkiza.  At Cape Sounion you will be able to explore the Temple of Poseidon and the rocky promontory where there are splendid views of the Saronic Gulf.

Overnight: Athens (B,L)

Day 4:

Athens – Olympia

You have an early morning departure today as you begin the drive towards Olympia on the Peloponnese Peninsula. Our drive will pass over the Corinth Canal, and visit Corinth, once one of ancient Greece’s city states.

Our next stop will be Epidavros, built near the ancient site of the birthplace of Apollo’s son, Asclepius the Healer.  Epidavros is well known for it’s theater but the Asclepieion was also a significant healing centre and sanctuary in ancient times.

Heading towards the north end of the Argolic Gulf you will arrive at Nafplion, the first capital of modern Greece, but today a fishing port.  While in the vicinity of Nafplion you will visit the winery of Skouras in Nemea where you may sample wines accompanied by a variety of Greek cheeses.

A short distance from Nafplion is the archaeological site of Mycenae, the centre of Greek civilization from around 1600BC to 1100BC. After exploring Mycenae, we drive a few hours to Olympia.

Overnight: Olympia (B)

Day 5:

Olympia – Delphi

This morning you will tour the archaeological sites in Olympia, the site of the Olympic Games in Classical times. This is a wonderful experience, and we have plenty of time to explore. We then continue our drive over the new bridge of Rio to Delphi, passing through Antirio.

The evening is at leisure.

Overnight: Delphi (B)

 Day 6:

Delphi - Kalambaka

Our touring this morning will include the sites of Delphi, famous in Classical times as the location of the Oracle of Delphi, thought to be the centre of the world, the exact spot marked by the Omphalosi Stone.  You will see the huge theatre accommodating 5,000 spectators. Notable buildings are the Treasury of the Athenians, built to commemorate victory against the Persians at the Battle of Marathon, and the Temple of Apollo. Additional exhibits within the museum at Delphi display a range of significant artifacts from the site.

Our drive then continues as we head towards Kalambaka and the famous Meteora monasteries, via Lamia and Trikala.

Overnight: Kalambaka (B)

Day 7:

Kalambaka - Thessaloniki

Today you will visit the monasteries of Meteora, one of the most significant Eastern Orthodox group of monasteries in Greece and now included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.  The isolated location of Meteora has been occupied for around 50,000 years. The monasteries are located high on spectacular cliffs, and of the remaining six monasteries, five are inhabited by monks and one, the Monastery of St. Stephen, by nuns. Following a tour of Meteora you will continue onto Thessaloniki.

Overnight: Thessaloniki (B)

Day 8:

Thessaloniki - Ouranoupolis

This morning you will set out for the township of Ouranoupolis, originally the ancient city of Chalcidice, on the northern Athos Peninsula. From Ouranoupolis we will join a cruise along the Athos Peninsula, dominated by Mount Athos. This region is famous as the centre of Eastern Orthodox Monasticism, and the cruise follows the peninsular from where the various monasteries are visible. After returning to Ouranoupolis, we drive back to Thessaloniki.

Overnight: Thessaloniki (B)

Day 9:

Thessaloniki

After breakfast we begin the day with a city tour of Thessaloniki.  Thessaloniki is Greece’s second largest city, a major economic, industrial, commercial and political centre and the capital of Macedonia.  The city has a rich history and was the birthplace of Ataturk, the founder of the Turkish Republic.

Next you will visit the village of Vergina near Mount Pieria and the ancient burial site for the kings of Macedonia including the tomb of Philip II, the father of Alexander the Great.

We then head to Pella.  Pella was the ancient capital of Macedonia and played further roles in Classical Greece.  It was once a port with access to the Thermaic Gulf but has since become landlocked.  Today Pella hosts the ‘Alexander The Great Marathon’, held in mid April. Continuing on we return to Thessaloniki.
