Day 2:

Athens

Today we begin your tour of Athens, touching on the major landmarks commemorating both ancient and modern Athens.  Your tour today includes a visit to the Stadium where the first Olympic Games of the modern era were held in 1896, the Presidential Palace guarded by the Evzones in their colourful uniforms, the Temple of Olympian Zeus, Hadrian’s Arch, the Parliament, the Memorial to the Unknown Soldier, the Academy, the University, the National Library and Constitution Square. We will then visit the Acropolis and it’s architectural masterpieces from the Golden Age of Athens including the Propylaea, the Temple of Athena Nike, the Erechtheion and of course, the magnificent Parthenon. Then we continue to Lycabettus Hill, 277 metres above Athens via the cable car where we will have a good view over Athens sitting between the Attica Mountain Range and the Saronic Gulf.  Here we can see the small church of St George and the Lycabettus Theatre.

Overnight: Athens (B)

Day 3:

Athens

The day begins with a visit to the new Acropolis Museum, and then you continue to the ancient Agora - the market place and centre of ancient Athens - to hear about the early history of Athens.  From here you wander through the busy streets of Monastiraki towards the historical centre of the Plaka and visit the 100 year old distillery “Brettos” to taste some Greek liqueurs. An enjoyable lunch will be served at a traditional Greek tavern before you take a drive along the coastal road to Cape Sounion, passing the beaches of Glyfada, Vouliagmeni and Varkiza.  At Cape Sounion you will be able to explore the Temple of Poseidon and the rocky promontory where there are splendid views of the Saronic Gulf.

Overnight: Athens (B,L)

Day 4:

Athens - Heraklion

After breakfast, we’ll pick you up for your private transfer to the Athens airport, to catch your domestic flight to Heraklion, Crete.

Upon arrival, you are greeted by our local representative and transferred by private car to your hotel. After checking in, meet with your guide at the lobby, and set off for a half-day tour to the nearby village of Archanes, retaining it’s traditional atmosphere and original features. There are four archaeological sites in the area - one in the village (a fenced excavation) and three close-by.  Vathypetro is worthwhile not only for the abundance of archaeological finds, but also some of the most magnificent views of Crete which you can see from the site. Late afternoon, enjoy the attractive cafes and tavernas with outdoor seating and tree-shaded terraces.

Overnight: Heraklion (B)

Day 5:

Heraklion – Knossos - Heraklion

After breakfast, you have a private tour to Knossos, the ancient capital of King Minos. Your guide will take you through the ruins of the ancient palace complex, which served as the administrative and religious centre for the whole region. After time to explore Knossos, we’ll head to the traditional village of Arolithos.  Well known for ceramics and beautifully crafted gifts, there is also a fabulous bakery which needs to be visited!

Overnight: Heraklion (B)

Day 6:

Heraklion – Festos - Heraklion

After breakfast, we’ll travel through the scenic rolling hills to the ancient palace of Festos,  strategically situated high above the valley of Messara. There, the famous Festos Disc was found; a disc with hieroglyphic type symbols of an unknown language, and stamped with seals on both sides. Leaving Festos, we drive to the pretty village of Matala, famous for its caves which surround the nearby bay.  Lunch is at a typical Cretan restaurant, where you will have the chance to taste local specialties.

Overnight: Heraklion (B)

Day 7:

Heraklion - Fodele - Chania

Today we drive westwards to the beautiful town of Rethymnon, a town that has preserved it’s local colour, with narrow streets and numerous shops, as well as a medieval fortress.  Your visit includes the archaeological Museum of Rethymnon, after which you can have lunch at a typical Cretan restaurant. After lunch, you’ll reach the village of Arkadi, famous for its historical monastery. The monastery is set amongst spectacular scenery at the edge of a gorge and represents a symbol of freedom for the Cretans. We then depart for the beautiful village of Fodele, the birthplace of the famous painter, El Greco.  The village is built in a very green environment and is known today as a centre of traditional textiles and handicrafts.  Late afternoon we will arrive in Chania.

Overnight: Chania (B,L)
