Sakkara – Memphis - Giza

This morning we set off to explore the mysteries of the Pyramids. First we visit the Great Pyramids of Giza. There will be time to wander and explore, plenty of photo opportunities and if open you will be able to enter the central chamber of Cheops. We then visit the Solar Boat Museum, and of course the mighty Sphinx. After lunch nearby, we drive through farmland to Memphis, once the capital of the Old Kingdom. Here you will see the incredible alabaster statue of Ramses II. From here we drive to Sakkara to view the World’s oldest stone structure, the “step” pyramid.

Overnight: Cairo (B,L)

Day 3:  (Fri)

An early start will see us at the Egyptian Museum at opening time. The museum holds an astonishing array of archaeological finds, but nothing compares to the exquisite riches of Tutankhamun, whose death-mask is magnificent. After lunch we enter the world of Islamic Cairo, and visit the Citadel and the 19th Century Mosque of Mohammed Ali. We then explore incredible Khan El Khalili Bazaar. There is time to ensure that you have tea or coffee at Café Fishawi – not only the oldest continuous running restaurant on Earth, but also the place where Naguib Mahfouz literally wrote his wonderful novels based in and around this part of Cairo.

Overnight: Cairo (B,L)

Day 4:  (Sat)

Today you visit Coptic Cairo which has evolved into a Christian and Jewish enclave.  Dating from the  5th century, Abu Serga is the oldest of its churches containing a crypt where Coptic tradition claims the Holy Family rested after fleeing from Herod.  The remains also include El Mullaqa  (the Hanging Church) built over the remains of a Roman gate, and the Coptic Museum, with its wonderful collection of medieval statues, icons and colorful textiles.  After lunch we drive across town to begin our Cairo Walking Tour, which takes us through El Moez Street, with its restored Ottoman houses, now surrounded by dozens of minarets. There will then be more time explore Khan el Khalili Bazaar, where you can try out your bargaining skills.

Overnight: Cairo (B,L)

Day 5:  (Sun)

This morning we will transfer you from your hotel to Cairo domestic Airport for your flight to Luxor.  Upon arrival we will transfer you to your hotel.  The afternoon is at leisure, and we suggest you explore the bazaar, visit the Luxor Museum, or stroll along the Corniche beside the Nile. Maybe all three?

Overnight: Luxor (B)

Day 6:  (Mon)

This morning we will help you check-in to your Nile Cruise Ship. After lunch on-board, it’s off to visit Karnak Temple. This enormous site is one of the highlights of a trip to Egypt and you will have plenty of time to explore before moving on to Luxor Temple in the evening. You then return to your ship.

Overnight: Nile Cruise Ship (B,L,D)

Day 7:  (Tue)

Luxor - Esna

Before departure, you will travel across the river to the wonderful Valley of the Kings. We will be able to enter a number of tombs. Tutankhamen’s tomb is now often closed in an effort to protect it, but if you are lucky to be there on a day in which it is open, you’ll be able to purchase a ticket to enter and explore. Notwithstanding, the Valley of the Kings is a fabulous experience. From here we visit the Valley of the Queens, home to the Temple of Hatshepsut. Hatshepsut ruled Egypt in disguise! He was a she, and managed to hide her identity from all and sundry. The only female Pharaoh. After returning to the ship, we set sail for Esna. Here, dozens of traders flood out to the cruise ship in tiny boats laden with Egyptian cotton goods.

Overnight: Nile Cruise Ship (B,L,D)

Day 8:  (Wed)

Edfu – Kom Ombo- Aswan

This morning, we ride by horse and carriage to magnificent Edfu Temple. The correct name is the Temple of Horus (the falcon God). One of the few temples left in Egypt which has retained most of its roof, it has remained in excellent order, with many of the original frescoes clearly evident. After lunch, the ship sets sail towards Aswan. En-route you will find the beautiful Kom Ombo Temple, set on the banks of the river. The ship will berth alongside, and you will be able to walk up and explore the temple which is dedicated to Sobek, the crocodile God. After leaving Kom Ombo it is a short sail to Aswan.

Overnight: Nile Cruise Ship (B,L,D)

Day 9:  (Thu)

Aswan - Philae

We have a full day of sightseeing today. Aswan is in a beautiful setting on the banks of the Nile, with enormous red sand dunes reaching down to the water. You will go up to the High Dam where the waters of Lake Nasser are held back. A short boat trip takes you to Philae Temple set on an island in the lake. Time to wander and explore Philae, before returning to the mainland and heading off to see the unfinished obelisk, still in its quarry setting. Later in the afternoon, take a felucca trip to one of the islands in the middle of the river, or explore the wonderful markets of Aswan.

These temples received world-wide attention in 1968 when they were completely dismantled and relocated to avoid inundation following the completion of the Aswan High Dam.  After completion of the tour we fly back to Aswan, and on to Cairo.
